The vegetation recovery over the last 20 years has renewed debate about irreversible land degradation and human management of the Sahelian ecosystem. The views range from those holding human mismanagement responsible for irreversible land degradation, to those emphasizing adaptiveness and rainfall driven responses in both vegetation and human management. The map shows vegetation in 1994. The small figure shows the rainfall situation (N-S shift in 300 mm isohyet) 1980 to 2005.
